Playing sports come with many health benefits. For example, it can strengthen your heart and lungs. Not only that, but it can reduce your stress levels as well.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any drawbacks, though. For one thing, there’s always a chance of injuries, especially when it comes to contact sports.

If anything, that’s why it’s so important to wear proper protective gear. The last thing that you want is to accidentally hurt yourself while playing!

Football is a rough sport that can lead to injuries even if you’re wearing a helmet and pads. Here are some of the most common scenarios.

  1. Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendinitis occurs when the band of tissue that attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone becomes inflamed. Left untreated, it can eventually lead to Achilles tendon rupture, which may require surgery.

Aside from pain, there may also be stiffness along the Achilles tendon, especially in the morning.

  1. Ligament Injuries 

Changing directions suddenly while running can lead to knee ligament injuries. For example, it can damage the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which is located in the center of the knee.

Depending on the severity, your doctor may recommend surgery, especially if you want to continue playing the sport.

  1. Concussions 

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that’s caused by a blow or jolt to the head. Symptoms include confusion, memory problems, dizziness, headache, or double vision.

The good news is that symptoms usually resolve on their own within two weeks.

  1. Sprains 

A sprain refers to abnormal stretching or tearing of a ligament. As it is, they’re usually seen in those who play football.

For example, a player might experience an ankle sprain if they land awkwardly on their foot after jumping. Depending on how severe the injury is, they may need to take a short break from playing.

  1. Metatarsal Stress Fractures

A metatarsal stress fracture results when there is an incomplete fracture or crack in one of the long bones of the foot. More often than not, it will lead to foot pain, which will worsen over time.

Note: Metatarsal bones are commonly fractured as there is minimal set tissue padding on top of the foot.
